Will Sumits is an ethnomusicologist, linguist, and sound artist. Since completing his doctorate at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in 2011, he has continued working in international cultural development and digital humanities throughout the greater Middle East and Central Asia. His experience in applied ethnomusicology has included program development and tour management for the Aga Khan Music Initiative and the Nile Project, building innovative music education initiatives and touring with musicians such as Alim Qasimov, Humayoun Sakhi, Kronos Quartet, and others. His research interests include trans-historical comparative makam studies, musical cosmopolitanism, innovation within tradition, and performance studies. Will has published his research and translations in diverse journals and books, and presented at various international conferences. He is currently both lecturer and librarian at the Dr. Erol Üçer Center for Advanced Studies in Music (MIAM) at Istanbul Technical University.
