Webinar: Jane Harrison – A Lévinasian Ethics of Music Listening
Wednesday, March 24th at 16:00 online zoom session
Jane Harrison, as a musicologist, will reflect on the ethics of music listening from her point of view based upon Lévinas’s ideas.
“In the mid-20th century, phenomenologist Emmanuel Lévinas, developed a theory of personal ethics, arguing that one can transcend the totalitarianism of the isolated ego through relational exchange with a radically different other person. For this process of moving “from totality to inifinity”, Lévinas emphasized expression and even valorized the sense of hearing positively related to the other senses, making me wonder if Lévinas’s ideas might be a strong starting point for an ethics of music listening. Taking the term “listening” to refer broadly to all the different ways in which one can experience music made by other people, can Lévinas’s ideas help us to engage with music makers and their works as radical Others that can teach us something truly new?”
